AFSJ General Assembly & Induction 2008 by Maria Lara C. Porciuncula
In spite of the dreary, cold and rainy weather that day, about 70 or more Filipinos students and guests attended the AFSJ General Assembly and Induction of New Officers and Members last May 31, 2008 (Saturday) at the Komaba Multi-purpose Hall. The GA promptly began on schedule and the highlights of the event are as follows: - Induction of new members and the officers for 2008-2009;
- Remarks from Consul Bong Carino of the Philippine Embassy in Japan;
- Heartwarming and inspirational speech from Dr. Maria Carmelita Z. Kasuya (Prof., The University of Tokyo);
- Outlining of activities for the current school year; and
- Raffle draw and giving away of prizes.
The GA was capped off with fun socials over delicious Filipino food and some dancing.
The current roster of AFSJ officers would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the ever-supportive senpais, fellow students, the Philippine Embassy and its sponsors for this event (Philippine National Bank, Metrobank, Brastel, Jolly-B, Philippine Airlines, IPS). |

Thursday, 25 October 2007 |
It was a night of fun and sharing last October 20, 2007 as AFSJ threw a Welcome Party for Filipino students who arrived this October. The welcome party was attended by more than 20 new students from Gakkugei Daigaku, Hitotsubashi University, International Christian University, Keio University, Nihon Daigaku, Sophia University, Takushoku University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, the University of Tokyo, and GRIPS. Senpai Muji hosted the party at the lounge of his floor at the Tokyo International Exchange Center in Odaiba. Before the Welcome Party, senpais toured kouhais at the Miraikan Museum and around Odaiba the whole afternoon. Senpais Save and Muji (of STAC-J) graced the party by sharing their experiences and insights as Filipino students in Japan. They shared their appreciation of Filipino organizations such as AFSJ which helped them get through the tough times. Senpai Save moreover underscored the value of seizing the opportunity to learn Nihongo while in Japan. Meanwhile Muji emphasized the cost of sending back the dead body of a fellow countryman to the Philippines (it's 200,000 yen per day!), the point being that its much wiser to spend time and effort fostering community spirit among Filipinos than caring for each other when its already too late. Most of the sempais who also shared their thoughts agreed. Sempais who volunteered help to make the party possible deserve thanks from the Executive Committee, viz., Bobet (TIT) who was the evening's master chef and Jayson (ICU) and John (Waseda) who stayed on until the end. Thanks also to Vivian who accompanied the kohais from ICU, and the "newly-surfaced" Hitotsubashi sempais for enlivening the evening with karaoke, Rhea being the new singing discovery. |
